What are BEI’s and why do they work so well?

A BEI (behavioural event interview) is a structured interview assessment approach that predicts future behaviour by exploring a candidate;‘s past behaviour.

Master behavioural event interviews training for your hiring managers. Behavioural Event Interview skills training teaches participants how to prepare for and conduct a hiring interview. Together we prepare an interview checklist, questions and an evaluation scorecard.

My Behavioural Event Interview (BEI) Training gives leaders a structured, proven approach to hiring.

Hiring the right people isn’t just about filling open positions — it’s about building strong, engaged teams that perform and stay. Interviewing skills training is an investment that helps leaders consistently hire people who meet job requirements while aligning with the corporate culture and values.

I’m Bruce Mayhew, your behaviour event interview & hiring trainer. Let me help you prepare for your next interview and best hire

My goal is to help you learn how to prepare for and conduct interviews that focus on past behaviour — one of the strongest predictors of future success. Participants also learn how to recognize and reduce unconscious bias, ensuring fairer and more inclusive hiring practices.

I specialize in helping leaders grow and keep their team adapting and their organizations thriving. That often means tailoring our existing business etiquette and human-skills training programs to meet the needs of my clients and their employees.

As a former Scotiabank leader, I spent 11 years in roles spanning sales & marketing, corporate marketing, and cash management — work that included launching debit point-of-sale in major markets, training national corporate sales teams, and supporting merger integrations. That early experience honed the strategic clarity and human-centred approach that I now brings to every engagement.

Today, clients value me and my work for my clear frameworks, energizing delivery, and immediately usable tools — whether I’m guiding a room through a tough feedback conversation or teaching busy executives how to prepare for and conduct a hiring interview. My training pillars — Write/Listen/Speak, Work Efficiently, and Leadership & Strategy — anchor custom solutions that match each organization’s culture, strategy, and goals.

I am a keynote speaker, professional development trainer, executive coach and author with over 20 years of experience. I have earned a reputation as a transformational leader and facilitator specializing in leadership development, difficult conversations / crucial conversations training, generational differences, email etiquette, time management and more.

In my personal time I volunteer for a number of local and national charities. I have been a board member on multiple Toronto based grass-roots not-for-profit agencies and am a recently retired part-time SPIN instructor which I loved doing for over 20-years.

Structured interviews introduce clarity and openness into your hiring processes. By systematically assessing candidates, you gain valuable insights into their likely future behaviour, performance strengths, and areas for development — empowering you to make more informed hiring decisions.

  3. Reduce Bias and Standardize Interview Results:

Structured Interview / Behaviour Event Interview Tips

Decide what to evaluate

One key ingredient of any job search is to know what you need and know what you can train. Some skills are mandatory, like being a licensed doctor, lawyer, plumber or electrician. In other cases human-skills or soft-skills like a persons character, work-ethic and personality may be more important with certain elements of job performance able to be learned on-the-job.
Knowing clearly what skills and personality traits are must haves and what are nice-to-haves will allow you to clearly find the best fit for the job and your corporate culture.

Format your questions and evaluation form well

When drafting your BEI, two ways you can begin your questions are:

- Tell me of a time when…

- Describe a situation when…

Be transparent with the candidate

As the interviewer, let your candidate know you are not looking for hypothetical responses. Instead, suggest people can use any type of experience. For example, someone may have limited or no work experience, therefore, encourage them to use their experience on a sports team, with a team at school or some experience they have had as a volunteer.

Practice your listening skills

As the interview, listen for the candidate to clearly describe the Situation or a Task plus an Action they took plus the Result from their action. This is known as the STAR structure. As you listen, if someone gave an answer that talked about a situation and the result, ask a follow up question that asks what action they took.
