Generational differences training: Empower your team to thrive across generations
We now have more generational diversity in our workforce than ever before. Bridging generational gaps isnât just about avoiding friction, itâs about unlocking potential. Imagine the benefits of:
- Increased trust and engagement
- Stronger collaboration and communication
- Better innovation and problem solving
- Greater job satisfaction
Surviving your multigenerational workforce
When teams understand and appreciate each others uniqueness and how much they also have in common, they learn how many opportunities there are to build more inclusive, collaborative, proud, and high-performing workplaces.
Baby Boomers are retiring, Generation X are blending traditional values with a desire for a modern workplace, Millennials are both the largest population and the newest wave of senior leaders, and Generation Z are proving they have something great to offer and are comfortable using AI in their work and research. That makes four highly-demanding generations in the workplace striving to build inclusive, highly productive cultures.
I'm Bruce Mayhew, your generational differences trainer
Leading a multigenerational and multicultural workforce requires a thoughtful and inclusive approach as Millennials and Gen Z become the two largest populations in our workspaces. Â
My goal is to work with your team to explore and share how each generation brings unique values, motivations and communication styles to their work. Instead of working against each other, I will help your team grow as we discuss the differences and similarities between each generation and build a bridge to the opportunities that come with these differences.
The âMillennials in the Workplaceâ survey we produced at Bruce Mayhew Consulting identifies 65.38% of our Millennial participants would prefer to stay with one company for at least 5 years. Unfortunately, 50% expect to change jobs in the next 2 years or less. Why? Mostly because their leaders don't offer advancement options.

Generational & cultural differences training tips
Leaders should inspire
We work in an multigenerational world. With four generations in the workplace, training is more important than ever. Inspirational leaders know how to motivate and mentor their multigenerational team. Intergenerational leadership includes everyone and cares for everyone... and this results in happy employees and happier customers.
Make the work relevant
Millennials want clear instructions about what their leaders want â but they want to complete the task their own way... and as long as it stays on time and on budget and follows the organizational values â why not? The key to managing and retaining all employees is to make their work relevant and important. When they are engaged and feel their contribution makes a difference, they will be loyal and work hard.
Embrace our differences
It's no longer possible to keep doing what we have been doing in the past and expect other people and especially other generations to be motivated by the same things we are. For example, Baby Boomers are traditionally motivated by money and recognize status and hierarchy.Â
Millennials want work/life balance, opportunity to better themselves and they want to know they are doing meaningful work. The best way to know who to motivate and reward your employees is not to look inward - but to ask each person... "What is important to you?"
Frequently asked questions about generational differences training
How do you define millenials?
The exact years of a Millennial changes depending on what country they are from and some cultural differences, however generally, Millennials (Generation Y) are born between 1980 - 1995.
A high-level Millennials definition should begin with their familiar reputation for being lazy which isnât as valid as most believe. What they do want is interesting work and to know they are making a difference. Millennials have been told by their parents that they can do anything and that everyone has a valid opinion. So, if you are a Boomer or Gen X parent and employer, you now know why Millennials in the workplace are not shy and expect their opinions to be heard.
There is much more that goes into the Millennials definition and knowing how to manage, motivate and retain them. Bruce was one of three speakers we invited to present at a conference with 800 plus attendees. Bruce presented two different seminars â one on difficult conversations, and one on time management.
Bruceâs presentations were fun, informative, and he engaged the audience with relevant questions and practical examples. I'm happy to say we immediately began receiving great feedback from conference participants, clearly marking Bruce as a great addition to our speaker lineup. Bruce was very open to working with our team to create and deliver content that we knew our participants were searching for.Â
As a manager, I found that the day following his difficult conversations seminar, I was able to recall and successfully use some of the techniques he spoke of.Â
I would recommend Bruce for future speaking and training opportunities.

With just a weekâs notice before our workshop, we urgently needed a speaker skilled in navigating difficult conversations. Despite attempts to find someone internally, we had to turn to an external expert. Luckily, Bruce was available on short notice, and we quickly collaborated to tailor the content specifically for our group.
Bruce led a focused workshop on managing difficult conversations and managing competing expectations among stakeholders. He engaged directly with our Digital Transformation and Operations Team, who frequently face complex situations.
Bruce demonstrated a deep understanding of our teamâs needs by blending practical training with relevant theory. We also worked through five real-world scenarios that addressed diverse challenges, enabling participants to immediately apply the workshopâs insights to their daily work.
It was a pleasure to work with Bruce and to have him speak to our team. His flexibility and expertise were greatly appreciated. I highly recommend him!
