Let other people’s accomplishments remind you of what’s possible, not what’s missing. Someone else’s success isn’t proof that opportunities are running out; it’s evidence that possibilities exist. Their achievements can become a window into your own potential.
There is enough pie for everyone.
Allow what others have done to awaken the creativity within you. Let their success and innovation encourage you to explore your own curiosity, strengths, dreams, and ideas. Let that energy challenge you to ask, “What have I always wanted to try? What part of myself have I not yet explored?” Use the success of others not as a measuring stick, but as inspiration. Then become an example to others by giving yourself permission to begin.
Trust in yourself. Trust that what you learn from your attempts and successes (and even your failures) is making you more interesting, resourceful and resilient.
Not everything you try will become a lifelong passion. Not every idea will even become a success story. Some things won’t work out. Some projects won’t be worth finishing. Some attempts may quietly fade away. But every experience will leave you with something valuable — a lesson, a skill, a memory, a perspective, a connection, or a story worth telling. There is no wasted effort in a life spent learning and experiencing.
So let your creativity out. Step onto the merry-go-round and reach for the golden ring. While you are on the ride, change horses to get another perspective. Talk to the operator, ask them how they required their experience, start up a conversation with another rider. Even if you don’t get the golden ring, let the ride itself be what matters. Notice how much fun you have exploring the unknown and that you laughed more than expected. You may meet people who become mentors, colleagues, or lifelong friends. You may become a mentor to others.
Read a book. Plant a garden. Take a course. Join a dinner club. Apply for a new role. Learn a language. Take up soapstone carving. Start a cake decorating podcast. Volunteer. Try to fix a lawnmower that won’t start. Write a book – or at least a chapter. Say yes to something that makes you a little nervous and a lot curious.
Life is full of opportunities and possibilities – but too often we stand on the sidelines watching others live their adventures while postponing our own until conditions are perfect. Don’t wait. Perfect only happens in the movies… and even then, not all the time. Trust yourself. Build your confidence. Celebrate the life others lead, and do not forget to embrace your own unique journey.
Your journey does not need to look like anyone else’s to be meaningful. There is no one path, no single timeline, and no perfect roadmap. And when you try something because you were inspired by someone else, let them know they inspired you and that they are making a difference.
The world doesn’t need another version of someone else.
Your future is out there. The world needs you.
